The Lev Reapers and Mercaz Moosen had impressive debut victories, while Team Rebound won a thrilling double-overtime classic, in the Yeshiva Basketball League.
Team Rebound 34 Moreshet Yerushalayim 32 (2 OT)
In a double-overtime thriller, Team Rebound and Moreshet Yerushalayim matched each other shot for shot at the end of regulation, then did the same in overtime, before the double-OT sudden death rule kicked in - and Rebound came down with the win.
In a tightly contested contest, with Ezra Berkowitz chipped away for points in the paint, to give Rebound a slim lead nearing the end of the first half lead - which Noah Fischman protected with the defensive play of the game, a fast-break chase-down block.
Moreshet went into halftime down by 4, but worked their way back to a tie early in the second half, and thereafter no team was able to lead by more than a possession.
With the score tied and 30 seconds left, James Dyckman pulled down a huge offensive board, and kicked the ball to Roni Heumann, who buried a clutch three-pointer. But in the waning seconds, as if on cue, Moreshet hit a three of their own, to tie it - and in overtime the teams remained indistinguishable as well, sending the game to sudden-death. With one team bound to persevere, Ezra Berkowitz won the opening tip of the period, directing it to James Dyckman, who made a heads-up pass to a streaking Roni Heumann, for the game-winning shot.
Mercaz Moosen 72 Jewish Culture 46
Elie Shapiro, shot the lights out, with 27 points including 7 three-pointers, to lead the Mercaz Moosen to victory in their inaugural game of the season.
“It was an incredible team effort,” said captain Simcha Rechnitz. “We’re looking to build on this success.”
Jewish Culture started slow before igniting a second-half rally, led by Daniel Pollack, Akiva Itzkowitz, and Dovi Shapiro.
“Team morale is high now, on the strength of that good second half,” said Pollack, the captain of Jewish Culture.
Itzkowitz assured his place on the highlight reel, with a tremendous rejection of a dunk attempt, bringing the boisterous crowd to its feet.
Team Alexander 80 Migdal Hatorah 42
Both teams came out hot, but Team Alexander used their advantage on the boards to move ahead in the first half, and pull away in the second.
Jake Kaweblum led all scorers with 20 points, with Moshe Wasserman adding 17. Both were beneficiaries of Shaya Goldberg’s dazzling dimes, while Jeremy Levin and Dovid Aronowitz added long-range buckets from beyond the arc.
Lev Reapers 43 Team Petlak 32.
Lev opened their campaign with a win - and with plenty of twins. Gabe Djemal and Jakey Arakanchi each registered an identical 9 points and 2 Assists, while Jack Franco and Moses Smeke had matching 7-point performances. Djemal and Smeke even paired up for 2 steals per person, while Yitz Dabbah and Jacob Zeitouni made symmetrical cameos for one assist apiece, for Lev’s doppelganger gang.
Isaac Faham made the final submission for the Reapers’ house of mirrors, and he did so in triplicate, dishing 6 assists, and pulling down a dozen rebounds - 6 offensive and 6 defensive, of course.
Team Gewurz 72 Blossom Bleu 45
In a stellar performance. Avi Schwartz was deadly from three-point range, and Ben Edidan ran the break to perfection for Team Gewurz. Schwartz, Edidan, and Nate Jacobs all scored in double-digits, for the high-octane Gewurz offense. Mordy Weisman tallied 14 for Blossom Bleu.
