Just a few weeks since beginning practices, the Efrata flag football players have begun to turn into a team, and they showed what they can do in an intra-team scrimmage this past Sunday.
Nadav Frank and Yona Wurtzburger-Shimmel each tallied a touchdown for Efrata, Elad Cohen's defense and Akiva Moss's endzone interception saved the game, Yedidya Rabinowitz caught several passes while breaking up others on defense, and Yovel Moss, Michael Glickman and Liam Wortman had nice completions on "down-and-in" and "button-hook routes, with each also displaying the team's newly-learned skill of centering, or "snapping", the ball.
Yona Wurtzburger-Shimmel's TD was a prime example of the Efrata squad's focus on improvement. A mere three months ago, she was learning how to catch a football for the first time, and wasn't quite sure what to do with the oddly egg-shaped ball when she caught it - but in Sunday's game, she deftly caught the ball and took off for the endzone, to score.
Nadav Frank's touchdown strike came on one of his patented deep slants - this time, however, he not only got open deep, but when the pass was off-target he came back into traffic and hauled it in.
Elad Cohen, Yedidya Rabinowitz, and Akiva Moss showed their skills on both sides of the ball, with great pass routes on offense, and determined shut-down defense. Their focus and patience paid off handsomely - Elad's defense saved at least one touchdown on a goal-line stand, Yedidya skippered his team's tight defense, and Akiva returned the aforementioned endzone pick nearly the entire length of the field.
Yovel Moss, Michael Glickman and Liam Wortman, three of the younger members of the team, showed that they can shine at any age. They each handled passes nicely, had good focus on defense, and even came up with some new creative pass routes. And, along with their older teammates, they each had turns starting the play, as the center who snaps the ball before running a pass route - a skill that they had practiced for the first time earlier in that same day's lesson.
The team ended the day with a quick team meeting, and coach Dovi complimented the team, not only on their improving football skills, but especially on the noticeable ongoing improvement in skills like sportsmanship and teamwork. The team was happy to realize that these important qualities help reduce distractions and improve practice and playing time, too. Akiva Moss summed it up nicely: "that means we can do more of the good stuff - playing football!"
